Key Highlights
- The Hong Kong Gold Exchange, the world’s one of the largest gold trading venue by volume, is integrating its gold-backed XGZ token with Chainlink’s Cross-Chain Interoperability Protocol through GoldZip and Midas Labs, enabling secure multi-chain transfers.
- Each XGZ token represents one gram of 99.99% fine physical gold held in accredited HKGX-approved vaults, with holders able to redeem physical gold bars subject to a 1,000 XGZ minimum along with KYC and AML verification.
- The integration expands XGZ beyond Ethereum to supported networks without proprietary bridges, adding institutional credibility and liquidity to tokenized gold while keeping the underlying gold backing and redemption rules unchanged.
On October 27, Chainlink announced that the Hong Kong Gold Exchange, the world’s fourth-largest gold trading venue by volume, is bringing its gold-backed token to the Cross-Chain Interoperability Protocol. GoldZip, operating through entities associated with HKGX, is integrating CCIP together with Midas Labs. The integration will allow the HKGX-backed XGZ token to transfer securely across various blockchain networks.
The announcement forms part of Chainlink’s “ROAD to Link: NYC” updates. GoldZip and Midas Labs confirmed the integration in coordinated posts, stating it will deliver greater accessibility, liquidity, and multi-chain utility with institutional-grade security.
XGZ Token Details
XGZ launched in December 2025 as an ERC-20 token. Each XGZ token represents one gram of 99.99% fine physical gold held in accredited vaults recognized and approved by HKGX. The token is divisible down to 0.00000001 XGZ. The token allows fractional ownership transfer. Holders can redeem physical gold bars, subject to a minimum of 1,000 XGZ, which equals one kilogram, along with eligibility verification, know-your-customer, and anti-money-laundering checks
As of late October 2026, circulating supply stood near 39,000 tokens with a total value of roughly $5 million. GoldZip has targeted physical gold reserves of about $300 million. Only HKGX members, after know-your-business checks, can mint tokens by depositing physical gold. A recent issuer change from a Singapore entity to a British Virgin Islands company did not require token holders to migrate or swap assets.
HKGX traces its roots to 1910 through the Chinese Gold and Silver Exchange Society and became Hong Kong’s sole official spot gold and silver exchange following a 2025 restructuring. It counts nearly 150 institutional members, including banks, jewelers, refineries, and dealers, and handles substantial daily trading volumes.
Midas Labs serves as GoldZip’s Web3 development partner, focusing on blockchain infrastructure for tokenized commodity trading and connecting physical reserves to digital markets. GoldZip is listed among the launch partners for Chainlink CCIP 2.0, released in late September 2026 to support institutional digital assets and cross-chain activity.
CCIP Opens Door for Token to Move Between Various Blockchains
CCIP provides a standardized system for moving tokens and messages between blockchains. Issuers retain control over asset movement while Chainlink infrastructure handles the cross-chain transactions. Currently limited to Ethereum, XGZ will soon be able to transfer across supported networks without relying on proprietary bridges. This expands potential use in decentralized finance, payments, and institutional platforms where gold-backed assets serve as collateral or stores of value.
The integration aligns with broader efforts to bring real-world assets on-chain under regulated frameworks. HKGX’s established position in physical gold markets supplies institutional credibility that pure crypto-native gold tokens often lack. Chainlink’s protocol adds the interoperability layer required for wider distribution and liquidity.
GoldZip frames the step as part of its strategy to scale tokenized gold for institutional markets in Asia and beyond. No changes to the underlying gold backing or redemption rules were announced. The focus remains on secure multi-chain mobility while preserving the direct physical gold linkage.
Link: NYC is Chainlink’s institutional event scheduled for October 29 in New York City. It is aimed at senior executives from banking, capital markets, institutional investing, and government. There are some popular figures, including those from the CFTC, DTCC, and major banks, along with discussions on real-world assets, interoperability, stablecoins, and market infrastructure.
