U.S. bank supervisors from the Federal Reserve and the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) contacted financial institutions starting Monday morning to check for any unusual activity or system disruptions following last week’s $6.3 billion hack of cryptocurrency exchange Binance.
According to some sources, regulators asked banks about potential vulnerabilities. One bank source reported no disruptions to its services and said staff prepared talking points for customers, though few inquiries followed.
Within hours of the attack, a cybersecurity team at one of the largest U.S. banks reached out to counterparts at Binance. That team is preparing an internal report that could lead to a review of its own systems and possible cybersecurity updates.
Binance stated it was unaware of specific conversations between bankers and U.S. regulators but remains in close contact with regulators across the globe, providing updates on the breach. A spokesperson confirmed the exchange is keeping authorities informed.
Binance Hack Sparks Fear in Financial World
The theft occurred late on October 29, 2026, when attackers drained approximately $6.3 billion to $6.4 billion from Binance hot wallets across multiple blockchains, mostly within about 20 minutes. The FBI attributed the attack to TraderTraitor, a North Korean state-sponsored hacking group. Blockchain firms TRM Labs and Chainalysis reached the same conclusion.
The crypto exchange said it set aside more than $6.34 billion in company funds to cover customer losses and has replenished the vast majority of affected assets. Partners including Circle and Tether froze roughly $3 billion in related stablecoins. The exchange restored most user balances and gradually resumed withdrawals. The crypto exchange has cooperated with the FBI, U.S. Secret Service, and other law enforcement agencies.
An initial investigation pointed to a compromised DevOps engineer’s laptop. Later details indicated the attackers spent months preparing, including a social-engineering scheme involving a fake job interview that led an engineer to download malicious software. They then used an internal AI tool to access wallet systems.
Binance Takes Precautionary Action on Third-Party Access
Separately, on November 5, Binance announced it had proactively removed all API keys linked to third-party platform SignalPlus after the firm reported a potential security issue. The exchange stressed that its own systems remain unaffected and that user funds are safe.
In its statement, Binance advised users who connected via SignalPlus to log into their accounts directly to review positions and open orders. It recommended waiting until SignalPlus confirms full resolution before rebinding any API keys and always enabling IP whitelisting.
The company also urged all third-party platforms integrated with Binance to review their security controls, monitor for unusual activity, and contact Binance immediately if any concerns arise. Co-CEO Yi He reinforced the message, noting that such issues are not a challenge for any single company and encouraging broader industry vigilance on third-party integrations.
The regulatory outreach to banks underscores how large crypto breaches now prompt checks across traditional finance. Banks are conducting their own diagnostics to defend against similar risks. While no widespread disruptions have been reported in the banking sector, the episode highlights the interconnected nature of crypto and conventional financial systems.
Binance continues recovery efforts and cooperation with investigators. The combination of the original hack response and the latest third-party precaution illustrates ongoing security pressures facing the industry.
