Key highlights:
-
Altcoin Season Index hit a yearly high of 66, but rising narrative categories plummeted from 92% to 23.1% in two weeks.
-
Capital moved away from retail-focused themes such as Memes (-6.60%) to focus on infrastructure themes such as Cross-Chain Bridges (+16.34%).
-
Outliers like ICP (+13.09%) and NEAR (+12.42%) rely heavily on volatile derivatives momentum and low-side liquidity pools.
The cryptocurrency market is experiencing a highly concentrated rally. Technical indicators still point to an active “altcoin season,” but a broader analysis of the market structure shows a small group of coins is doing the heavy lifting while most others are in a pronounced bear market decline.
The Illusion of a Broad-Based Altcoin Season
The Altcoin Season Index recently rose to 61, 21 points above its 10-week moving average, according to data compiled by 10X Research. Historically, only about 6% of weekly readings over the past three years have surpassed this level. The Altcoin Season Index from aggregative market tracking firm MetaEra also points to this trend, as the metric hit a year high of 66. The index also reveals that 66% of the top 100 cryptocurrencies have performed better than Bitcoin in the last 90 days.

Despite the multi-month high in the altcoin season index, a majority of major cryptocurrencies show a notable pullback. The pioneer cryptocurrency, Bitcoin, trades at $83,228 following a slight uptick of 0.68% in the last 24 hours but a 3.72% decrease in the last seven days.
Meanwhile, the broader cryptocurrency market cap rose 0.31% since yesterday to $2.79 trillion, while average daily trading volume surged 29% to $89.67 billion ahead of key macroeconomic data such as the U.S. Consumer Price Index (CPI) report.
The main risk of the structure is the reduction in market participation. The percentage of crypto assets trading above their 50-day moving average has declined from more than 75% to 65.2%. This drop suggests profit-taking is continuing at the local level across the asset class.
A Drastic Collapse in Narrative Breadth
Sector rotation data is the clearest sign of a stretched market. Only 6 of the 26 identified crypto narrative categories had price gains over the last 7 days, giving the crypto market a narrow width of 23.1%. It is an aggressive decline from two weeks ago when 24 of 26 categories (92% width) were actively trending higher.
In contrast to the rising tide lifting all the boats, capital has fiercely concentrated on a few sub-sectors: cross-chain infrastructure and data availability networks. Other, more user-centric themes have lost steam in recent months.
The decentralized social category dipped by 7.49%, meme tokens fell 6.60% (including DOGE and SHIB, which were down 8.61% and 7.07% respectively), while the Solana ecosystem shrank 6.44%.

This cooling is evident in on-chain engagement: decentralized exchange (DEX) activity on Solana dipped by 60% from a 30-day average and 48% from a 30-day average on Ethereum.
Assets Defying the Slump
The average 24-hour gain for the top 50 cryptocurrencies during a day’s review was only 3.55%. Only two projects of the large-cap group made the cut at an outperformance of two standard deviations from the mean (+11.55%):
- Internet Computer (ICP): Ranked 46, ICP surged 13.09% in a single day to reach $3.448. This one-day increase represented its weekly gain. The rally was accompanied by critical milestones such as the DFINITY team passing initial ICANN review with their top-level domain application for .icp as well as developer vouchers for the upcoming cloud engine infrastructure.
- NEAR Protocol (NEAR): Ranked 16, NEAR jumped 12.42% to trade at $5.892. NEAR’s push was not driven by direct news catalysts, but rather by technical momentum and the volume of derivatives activity, with a 150% gain in 30 days.

The current crypto market situation is a textbook case of an unbalanced altcoin season. The index metrics look historic on paper, but beneath the surface, the rally rests on a very fragile foundation. The unexpected plunge from broad sector growth to hyper-concentrated gains within two weeks suggests capital isn’t flowing in evenly.
Instead, liquidity is now being chased quickly and switching roles between user-facing retail tokens like Memes, tokens from the Solana ecosystem, and more niche infrastructure areas, such as data availability.
