Key Highlights
- Solana’s Alpenglow is ready to go live on the mainnet network today, October 21, 2026.
- Alpenglow replaces TowerBFT with Votor and targets roughly 150-millisecond transaction finality, down from around 12.8 seconds.
- The change moves validator voting off-chain, is expected to cut related validator costs by around 60%, and frees block space previously used by vote transactions.
Solana’s largest consensus overhaul after its 2020 launch, known as Alpenglow, is activating on mainnet on October 21, 2026. The upgrade replaces the network’s long-standing TowerBFT voting system with a new protocol called Votor and targets transaction finality of roughly 150 milliseconds.
According to the official document shared by Solana, Alpenglow is slated to be active on mainnet in epoch 1064 on October 21, 2026, at approximately 13:20 UTC. The upgrade replaces the network’s long-standing TowerBFT voting system with a new protocol called Votor and targets transaction finality of roughly 150 milliseconds.
Finality is the point at which a transaction becomes irreversible on the blockchain. Under the previous system, this process generally took about 12.8 seconds. The new targets represent a major reduction, potentially 40 to 85 times faster depending on the exact baseline used, and aim to make Solana settlements feel closer to those on centralized exchanges or traditional payment systems.
Alpenglow Targets Near-Instant Finality
Alpenglow is a multi-phase consensus redesign led by Anza, the team behind the Agave validator client. The first phase, activating now, focuses on Votor. Validators will send votes directly to one another off-chain and aggregate them into compact BLS certificates rather than embedding individual vote transactions in blocks.
Blocks can finalize via a fast path of around 100 milliseconds when 80% of stake certifies in the first round, or a two-round path of around 150 milliseconds with 60% thresholds. The design is intended to tolerate up to 20% malicious stake along with 20% offline stake.
A later phase, Rotor, is planned to improve block propagation by replacing the Turbine system that is not included in today’s activation. Execution, the Solana Virtual Machine, transaction fees, and application logic remain unchanged. Users and developers do not need to take any action for wallets or apps to continue functioning.
The upgrade was approved by validators via governance in September 2025 through SIMD-0326. It underwent extensive testing, including multiple testnet restarts, a failed migration that was rolled back, and successful runs on testnet and devnet in late September.
The most immediate effect is much faster deterministic finality. This should improve the user experience for decentralized exchanges, payments, and high-frequency applications by reducing the wait time before funds or trades can be treated as settled.
Apart from this, on-chain vote transaction fees are eliminated and replaced by a fixed Validator Admission Ticket of about 0.8 SOL per epoch, which is roughly daily. Operators have estimated this could cut related costs by around 60%. Validators must run compatible client software, such as Agave 4.3 or equivalent, and have registered BLS keys to participate.
Because votes no longer appear on-chain transactions, reported network transaction counts and TPS figures are expected to drop significantly after activation, even if actual use activity remains steady or grows. This is an accounting change rather than a reduction in real throughput, and the freed block space can be used for more user transactions.
The migration itself is designed as a live handoff. Epoch 1064 begins the process, estimated around 13:20 to 14:50 UTC depending on slot timing. TowerBFT continues for approximately 5,000 slots, or about 18 minutes, after which Alpenglow takes over at a designated slot numbered 459,653,000. A short period of limited user transactions is possible during the precise switch.
SOL Price Movement Amid Alpenglow Upgrade
SOL traded at around $106 to $107 in the hours around the activation window, holding above $100 after recent volatility and amid broader market conditions that included ETF outflows in preceding sessions. At the time of writing this, SOL is trading at around $106 with a market capitalization of $62.807 billion and daily trading volume of $2.597 billion, according to CoinGecko.
As per our technical analysis, Alpenglow could turn into a positive medium-term technical catalyst rather than an immediate price driver.
