The U.S. Department of Justice has launched a major crackdown on cryptocurrency fraud, targeting more than $225 million in digital assets linked to investment scams.
Federal investigators say the money was stolen from victims through fake crypto investment schemes, then laundered through complex blockchain transactions designed to hide its illegal origins.
The DOJ’s Historic Action
According to the court document, scammers tricked hundreds of victims into sending money by pretending to offer legitimate cryptocurrency investments. Once they had the funds, criminals moved the money through a sophisticated network of wallets and exchanges, making thousands of transactions to cover their tracks.
Investigators used blockchain analysis tools to follow this digital paper trail and identify the stolen funds.
“This is about protecting Americans from fraud and holding criminals accountable,” said Matthew R. Galeotti of the DOJ’s Criminal Division.
The case represents the largest cryptocurrency seizure ever made by the U.S. Secret Service. Officials emphasized that such scams have become increasingly common, with the FBI reporting over $5.8 billion in crypto investment fraud losses in 2024 alone.
The Justice Department worked closely with cryptocurrency company Tether to track the stolen funds. Authorities are now working to return the seized money to victims, though the process could take time.
“We want to get this money back to the people who earned it honestly,” said Shawn Bradstreet of the U.S. Secret Service.
Victims of cryptocurrency scams are encouraged by officials to report their losses to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center and reference case number “BT06182025.”
The massive seizure sends a clear message that U.S. authorities are stepping up enforcement against crypto-related crimes, with more actions expected in the future.
