The crypto-based human identity project, World, which is backed by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, is officially launching in six US cities, including San Francisco, Los Angeles, Austin, Miami, Nashville, and Atlanta.

The company announced a forthcoming Visa debit card, which will link directly to users’ World App wallets, allowing them to spend crypto assets like $WORLD anywhere Visa is accepted. Merchants will receive payments in fiat currency, bypassing the need to manage cryptocurrencies directly.
In order to increase its utility, Worldcoin is extending beyond identity verification.
‘World’ is also exploring new territory in online dating. Through a partnership with Match Group, it will pilot a program on Tinder in Japan to help users confirm the authenticity of profiles — a growing concern as AI-generated personas become more sophisticated. “Meeting new people should feel exciting and secure,” the company said in a statement.
Additionally, the World App will now support prediction markets via a new integration with Kalshi, giving users access to real-time forecasting tools within the app.

With over 26 million app downloads and around 12 million verified “unique humans,” World has positioned itself as one of the most ambitious efforts to bring identity verification to the blockchain era.
The project, which aims to verify individual personhood through biometric scanning, offers users $WORLD tokens in exchange for establishing a “World ID.” This US launch is expected to be an important step towards distinguishing real people from AI-generated bots in an increasingly digital, AI-saturated world.
World, formerly known as Worldcoin, grabbed attention(and also scrutiny)globally for its approach to identity verification, which involves using silver Orbs to scan users’ irises. The company insists it does not store biometric data, only uses it to confirm humanity, and has ambitions to scale to over 1 billion users worldwide. World is also developing smaller “mini-Orbs” and partnering with gaming brand Razer to bring real-human verification to online gaming, including at Razer’s retail locations.
