After wreaking havoc on the crypto industry, North Korea has now set its sights on OpenAI. In response to this threat, OpenAI has banned the accounts of a North Korean hacker group suspected of engaging in malicious activities.
OpenAI bans North Korea’s hacker group
ChatGPT developer OpenAI recently stated that the company has banned and removed accounts from North Korean users who are suspected of using its technology to involve in malicious activities, including surveillance and public opinion manipulation.
OpenAI said in a report that these activities are ways authoritarian regimes could use AI technology to exert control over the United States and its own people. According to a report, the company added that they use AI tools to detect these malicious operations. OpenAI did not disclose the specific number of accounts banned or the time frame in which the relevant actions took place.
In one instance, notorious agents possibly linked to North Korea used AI to generate fake job applicant resumes and online profiles for the purpose of fraudulently applying for positions at Western companies. Moreover, a group of ChatGPT accounts suspected of being linked to financial fraud in Cambodia used OpenAI technology to translate and generate comments on social media and communication platforms, including X and Facebook.
Interestingly, while the rise of North Korean threats may be new to the AI industry, it is not new to the crypto industry. Recently, North Korea’s Lazarus Group executed the largest heist in crypto history, stealing $1.5 billion.
