On May 12, Simon Gerovich, CEO of Metaplanet, first announced that the company has bought an additional 1,241 bitcoins, bringing its total holdings to 6,796 BTC. This outpaced El Salvador’s national holdings, which stood at 6,714 BTC at the time. El Salvador currently holds 6.195K BTC, which is currently worth $649.75 million. Bitcoin is currently trading at $104,939.17 after a jump of 0.19% in the past day. With a market cap of $2.08 trillion, BTC had recently marked the ATH of $111,970.17 on May 22.
As per the figures from Coingecko, the global crypto market cap today is $3.39 trillion, which is a 1.9% shift in the past 24 hours. Moreover, total cryptocurrency trading volume on the last day was at $73.8 billion, with Bitcoin’s dominance at 61.4%.
Bitcoin is not just making headlines for its price movement, but business tycoon Elon Musk also, in his atypical approach to novel technologies, brought up BTC’s tech for X. Social media platform X is rolling out a new messaging feature, XChats, which owner Elon Musk says will have “Bitcoin-style encryption.”
XChat is seemingly a more feature-rich version of the platform’s direct messaging function, which will feature audio and video calling, “encryption, vanishing messages, and the ability to send any kind of file,” Musk said in a June 1 X post.
The new messaging service is built on the Rust programming language, which Musk said had “(Bitcoin-style) encryption, whole new architecture.”
This isn’t the first time Musk (known for his D.O.G.E. endeavors) has shared his thoughts on topics closely related to crypto. Musk, who has previously made insinuations about the cryptocurrency Dogecoin, recently renamed his X profile name to “Gorklon Rust,” a playful reference to $GORK, a memecoin based on Grok, the AI chatbot created by his xAI.
